President Tsai Ing-wen praised US military cooperation with Taiwan on Thursday, commissioning the first of two F-16 combat wings upgraded with US assistance to bolster Taiwan's defenses amid rising tensions between the island and Beijing. In the region, frequent military drills between China and the USA have raised fears of conflict originating in the crisis over democratically-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own.

The U.N. envoy to Afghanistan on Wednesday delivered a bleak assessment of the situation following the Taliban takeover, saying that an affiliate of the Islamic State group has grown and now appears present in nearly all 34 provinces. U.N. Special Representative Deborah Lyons told the  U.N. Security Council that the Taliban appears to be heavily reliant on extrajudicial detentions and killings of suspected ISKP members in response to the expansion of the Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISKP).

Boris Johnson, British Prime Minister, said Wednesday that it would be a "tragic mistake" for Russia to engage in "military adventurism" on the borders of Poland and Ukraine, amid escalating tensions in the region. "What we've got to do is to make sure that everybody understands that the cost of miscalculation on the borders of both Ukraine and of Poland would be enormous," Johnson told a panel of senior UK lawmakers.
Parliament of Pakistan approves chemical castration of habitual rapists. Detailed.
The Pakistan Parliament on Wednesday passed the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2021, which seeks to punish habitual rapists by chemical castration, amending the Pakistan Penal Code 1860 and the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898. Senator Mushtaq Ahmed of Jamaat-i-Islami protested against the bill and called it un-Islamic and against Sharia law. According to reports, he suggested hanging rapists publicly, but castration does not appear in the Sharia.
