10 most haunted places in India

Updated: Nov 27, 2022

If you are an adventure junkie, here are the ten most haunted

places in India. If you have the courage, go ahead and explore

the unknown! There are forts, towns, Beaches, and even a film

city among them!

Bhangarh Fort

Considered one of the most ghostly places in Asia, Bhangarh is a

town in Alwar in Rajasthan and is said to be a spooky place.

Bhangarh Fort, known as Haunted, is also a tourist destination but

no one is allowed to enter the fort at night. There are also

warnings not to hike through the area after sunset. The story

tells that a magician wanted to marry a princess of the region,

but since this was not possible, he decided to put a spell on her,

but when the princess found out about it, she had the magician

killed. But the wizard cast a spell on the palace before he died,

and the whole place has been doomed since then.

Jatinga, Assam

This is a strange story that has nothing to do with humans but is

still feared. Jatinga is a charming town in Assam, but it has

become a curious case after dead migratory birds have been

found year after year. It used to be thought that there must be

natural causes, but since it happens every year, studies have been

conducted to find out the reason, but no one has been able to find

the exact cause yet. The site is known today as a place of bird suicides. It is said that the birds swoop themselves to their deaths on moonless nights, especially during September and October. Since this phenomenon is believed to have been occurring for centuries, Jatinga is a place where not even the brave dare to go on moonless nights.

Dow hill, West Bengal

There is a Dow Hill Boarding School in the area which is said to

be haunted. People believe that they have seen ghosts in the

area. There is a forest around the school which contributes to the

mystical stories. It is said that years ago there were many

murders in the forest and that is why spirits have been wandering around Dow Hill.

Ramoji film city, Hyderabad

It's one of the biggest film cities in the world and definitely the

most popular place to shoot movies. There are several hotels in

film city where strange occurrences have been reported. There

were stories like lights falling on light's man, strange stains on the

mirror, etc. It seems that the spirit hates women more than men since some girls have said that their clothes were ripped off when nobody

was there, or that someone banged on the bathroom door when

nobody was in the room, etc. It is said that the authorities took

many measures to stop these kinds of incidents, but it still

happens. It is believed that ghosts haunt the location because the

site was once the war grounds of the Nizam and before that a burial ground for robbers.

Dumas beach, surat

This black-sand beach in Gujarat was once an important Hindu

cremation site, and it's this history that gives it an air of mystery.

The cheerful atmosphere in the morning fades with the sunset,

and at night locals avoid Dumas Beach as much as possible. From blood curdling shrieks to whispers, people reportedly have

heard haunting sounds coming from Dumas, which are said to be

the spirits of tormented souls. Some attribute the black sand to

the ashes of cremated corpses, and on top of that, nearby dogs

bark all night long, sensing a paranormal presence. Everything

about Dumas Beach makes it the last place you want to be at

night.

Shaniwarwada fort, Pune

Shaniwarwada is a historical place in Pune city of Maharashtra.

The fort is popular for its complex structure and carvings. But

this fortress is haunted by a ghost who cries out for help.

According to legend, Narayan Rao Peshwa, the young prince, was

tragically stabbed to death by a masked person claiming to be a

courtier. The cries of the Peshwa asking for help, "Kaka Mala

Vachva" which means; Uncle, save me!; can be heard every full

moon night to this day.

Writer's building, Kolkata

The Writer's Building may be one of Kolkata's landmarks and one

of the most famous buildings in India, but that hasn't stopped it

from being one of the most haunted places in India. Locals believe

the ghost of a British man named Captain Simpson still haunts the

building from when he was murdered here decades ago. Many have claimed to hear footsteps and noises at night.

GP block, Meerut

GP Block is certainly a party spot for ghosts as many who have

passed through the area at night claimed to have seen four

ghosts sitting around a candle with drinks. There are also stories

of a young woman wandering around in a red saree. Because of

this, many avoid going to the place at night, but there are

adventure lovers who enjoy seeing it. Anyway, it is one of the

most haunted places in India and also one of the most visited due

to the curiosity that the place inspires.

Bhuli bhatiyari ka mahal, Delhi

Located in Karol Bagh, Bhuli Bhatiyari ka Mahal was actually

named after a person 'Bu-Ali Bhatti' who worked as the site's

caretaker. It was built as a hunting lodge by Firuz Shah Tughlaq

in the 14th century. The site was abandoned after some time and

is believed to have been that way for centuries. Today it is a

desolate place that not only looks spooky but is also one of the

most haunted places in Delhi as many have said they heard

strange noises from this place. Even during the day, the place

looks scary enough.

Karnataka (Nale Ba)

Nale Ba is a popular folk legend that features prominently in

areas across Karnataka, India. This dates back to the 1990s when

news spread that a witch would visit random houses in Karnataka

and knock on the door and she would then call men inside in the

voice of their relatives, especially their mothers. The innocent and

unsuspecting man would open the door and die within the next 24

hours. Someone remarked that writing Nale ba ("Come tomorrow" in

Kannada, the local language) on the front door of the house

caused the witch to walk away when she got to the door and saw

the inscription. It has become a tradition in many families to

write this down to ward off the evil spirit. This eventually led to

April 1st being known as Nale Ba Day among the locals. It also

inspired the Bollywood movie 'Stree'.
