Biden goes after Ukraine's wish list

President Biden's phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday did not raise expectations that tensions would quickly calm down after Moscow's troop buildup along the Ukrainian border. But Ukrainian officials were happy that Biden signaled the U.S.'s intention to stand by Ukraine.

In the Biden-Putin call, the United States expressed fears that Russia could be planning to send military assets into eastern Ukraine, where Russia-backed separatists have been battling Western-backed forces since 2014. Annexed from Ukraine that same year, Russia took control of Crimea.

There has been no indication that a military move is imminent, but Russia has sought concessions including a guarantee that Ukraine will not join NATO.

“Everything is possible in life, but I would not expect any breakthroughs,” Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, told a Kyiv talk show late Monday
