BJP MP asks the cultural minister to make cow a national animal

Union cultural minister Reddy was responding to a number of inquiries from Bhagirath Choudhary, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who asked the culture ministry whether the government intended to recognise the "Gaumata," or cow, as a national animal while also considering the protection and revival of the Indian and "Sanatan culture" by introducing legislation in Parliament.

Reddy responded by stating that the Peacock and Tiger were designated as National Animals and National Birds, respectively, by the Government of India, and that both were listed in Schedule-I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act of 1972.
