Beijing's official line on the U.S. boycott of the Winter Olympics is that China couldn't care less and U.S. officials weren't invited anyway.
Nevertheless, the White House's announcement that neither President Biden nor any other U.S. official will attend the Games in Beijing has caused consternation in the Chinese capital. On Tuesday, Zhao Lijian said China has made "solemn representations" to the United States, accusing it of seeking to "sabotage" the Games. He dismissed the American move as simply grandstanding. Commentaries online as well as state media have made similar arguments, saying that U.S. politicians were flattering themselves if they believed their presence was important. According to Jinwei, a former editor at the official Xinhua News Agency, the United States is like "the village bully who does not get an invitation to your wedding banquet but is quite vocal about not attending."
