Among the aging bungalows and faded campers that crowd up against roaring freeways, Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) grew up surrounded by undocumented immigrants.
His father, Santos Padilla, an 80-year-old naturalized citizen, described how he and his late wife came to the United States as "illegals" following mass one recent Sunday. “Like everyone.”
He became the first Latino senator from California in January when Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed him to fill Vice President Harris' vacated seat. He now chairs the immigration subcommittee. Although he and others have twice failed to convince a Senate parliamentarian that citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States should be included in a budget bill that Democratic leaders hope to pass as part of a massive spending bill this year.
