In response to five weeks of concerns over the safety of tennis player Peng Shuai in China, the International Olympic Committee announced Tuesday it can't provide any guarantees about her case.
Two video calls with the Olympics are the only contacts Peng has had with people outside China since she sent a social media post alleging sexual assault by a former top Communist Party official on Nov. 2.
The International Olympic Committee has come under fire from some critics for allegedly facilitating a cover-up by China ahead of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, scheduled for February.
IOC officials faced more questions Tuesday about Peng at their first news conference since the Women's Tennis Association suspended its tournaments in China after not being able to reach her.
Mark Adams told reporters that the International Olympic Committee cannot provide absolute certainty about anything. “All we can do is do the best we can in the process that we believe is in the best interests of the well-being of the athlete.”
