Two people were detained on Saturday by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for allegedly smuggling 665 exotic animals from Malaysia, including turtles, pythons, lizards, tortoises, and iguanas, worth around $3 million.
The defendants had hidden the animals in boxes of other declared commodities, such as aquarium fish, and shipped them into India as air cargo. Sadly, it was discovered that 117 of the animals that were being smuggled had passed away in transit.
Immanvel Raja, a 36-year-old resident of Dharavi, and Victor Lobo, a 36-year-old resident of Mazgaon, have been named as the arrested.
Along with representatives from the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, the DRI returned the truck to the Air Cargo Complex for inspection. There, they discovered 665 different exotic animals, 117 of which were discovered dead.
