India overtakes China as the world's most populated nation. India has surpassed China to become the world's most populated country, according to figures from the UN, with 142.86 crore inhabitants. The UN world population dashboard estimates that China has 142.57 crore people. Since 1950, when the UN started compiling population figures, India's population has increased by more than one billion, according to the Pew Research Centre.
