On Friday, Chief Justice of India UU Lalit announced that journalist Siddique Kappan will be granted bail by the Supreme Court. The journalist from Kerala was detained under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in October 2020 while on his way to Hathras in Uttar Pradesh where a Dalit woman had died after allegedly being gang-raped.
According to the cops, he had ties to the Popular Front of India (PFI) while the journalist has always claimed that he is being framed.
After appearing in front of the trial court in three days, the journalist will be released. The Supreme Court ordered Kappan to stay in Delhi for the next six weeks and to report to the local police station in Nizamuddin every week. Other restrictions have also been imposed.
After six weeks, the journalist will be permitted to travel to Mallapuram in Kerala, where he will be required to report to the local police station once a week.
Following his release, Kappan's wife Rahyanth stated that the family had suffered greatly for the past two years. While Kappan was in jail, his mother died in June 2021 and Supreme Court granted him five days to visit his ailing mother in February 2021.
ET Mohammad Basheer, a Muslim League MP, praised the Supreme Court decision while noting that many such undertrials are still incarcerated.
