In response to Australia's decision to join the United States in a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Olympics, the Chinese Embassy in Australia said it is Australia's responsibility to fix the "current predicament" in bilateral ties. “Mountains cannot stop the river from flowing into the sea,” China's embassy spokesperson said, noting that success for Australia at the Beijing Winter Olympics will depend on the performance of its athletes, not the attendance of officials.
According to the Australian prime minister, Scott Morrison, no Australian officials will attend the Winter Olympics in Beijing in February. Canberra's decision comes amid growing differences with China in a range of issues that have sparked the most serious crisis in relations since 1989's Tiananmen Square crackdown.
