Delhi Traffic Police has launched a specific campaign to promote the use of rear seat belts, failing which there would be a fine of 1,000 rupees, in an effort to strengthen traffic safety regulations.

Since Cyrus Mistry, a veteran industrialist's, unexpected death on September 4 in a car accident, the Central Government has made it a top priority to increase the safety of rear-seat passengers in four-wheeled vehicles.

The police checked for compliance on the first day of the special drive on Barakhamba Road near Connaught Place in central Delhi. In the afternoon of Day 1, the Delhi traffic police issued 17 challans. Each of the offenders received a Rs 1,000 fine.

According to Section 194B (usage of safety belts and child sitting) of the Motor Vehicles Act, a total of 17 court challans were issued during the drive from 11 am to 1 pm, a senior police officer said.
