Omicron and Covid's third year is marred by uncertainty

Michael Kerr learned about the new Omicron variant from his wife's cell phone on Thanksgiving Day, like most of us in the United States.

"We looked at it and decided not to proceed at this time," said Kerr, director of strategy for the Portland Bureau of Transportation. "I think everyone feels restless and frustrated generally. Rather than being frightened, people seem to be tired.

"It's kind of in limbo again," he said. “It feels like it’s July all over again. And who knows what’s going to happen?”

Almost two years after the coronavirus pandemic originated in the United States, it has been an article of faith that it will ultimately end. Nothing should give rise to any doubt about that. We will one day have powerful vaccines and naturally acquired immunity making this virus an endemic disease on par with the flu.
