Omicron's immunity to the Pfizer shot is on the decline: Early research

|Shiksha Dev|THE DEN|

During an early study in South Africa, researchers found that Pfizer's vaccine against Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) actually has less impact on immunity against the Omicron variant than it does on immunity against other versions of the virus. In lab experiments conducted at Africa Health Research Institute in Durban, researchers found that Omicron was associated with a 40-fold reduction in neutralising antibodies produced in individuals who received two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech SE shot compared to the strain that was detected in China two years ago. Research head Alex Sigal said that the immune protection loss is "robust, but not complete" and that further studies are needed to quantify the vaccine's effectiveness in preventing the disease.
