Several people were injured at the very first campaign event of French far-right presidential candidate Éric Zemmour today, forcing him to take a break from the campaign trail and signaling polarization heading into the election.
During Zemmour's walk toward the stage during a rally in the Paris suburb of Villepinte, a man was seen lunging for him by the neck and holding him in a headlock for a moment before police intervened.
Zemmour's speech went mostly unnoticed by the crowd of about 13,000 people. Zemmour's speech lasted for almost an hour and a half. In May 2012, he announced the launch of a new party called Reconquête, which refers to the expulsion of Muslims from the Iberian peninsula by Christian forces during the Middle Ages. As his supporters waved flags, he vowed to cut immigration to almost zero if elected and expel unsuccessful asylum seekers and illegal immigrants.
