The human mind is a package of inventions and experiments. Everything in this world has its own history and story. Well, do you know that lingeries have a long history too!



1866 Silk and wire were used to create the first-ever bra, which was introduced in Great Britain.


1869 Frenchwoman Herminie Cadolle redesigned the corset by dividing it into two pieces and creating corselet-gorge (which supported the breasts) and soutien-gorge (a bra with straps).

1907

In the history of bras, the word "brassiere" first appeared in American Vogue. It was added to the Oxford English Dictionary a year later.


1910 19-year-old socialite from New York, Mary Phelps Jacobs sew 2 silk handkerchiefs with pink silk ribbon and cord. Hence, "backless style" was created! She later sold the patent to Warner Brothers Corset Company for $1,500.


1917 Due to a lack of metal during World War 1, women were instructed to stop wearing corsets since they featured metal wiring frames. At that point, ladies started wearing brassieres as an alternative.


1920 In 1920, bandeaus replaced brassieres. They gave ladies an androgynous appearance by flattening the bust.


1922 Maidenform was founded in 1922 by Ida Rosenthal, her husband William, and Enid Bisset. This was a significant turning point in the history of bras since it marked the beginning of the contemporary system of cup sizes. The brassiere created at this time accentuated the feminine body's inherent form.


1930 The term "bra" first appeared in popular culture in 1930.

1940 Conical-structure bras were developed during World War 2 to safeguard women.

1947 Frederick Mellinger created the first push-up technique in 1947.


1950 Marilyn Monroe, an actress, made the Sweater Girl style popular in 1950. (wearing a bullet style). This caused the trend to suddenly boom.


1968 During the Miss America Competition in Atlantic City Broadway, the infamous "Freedom Trashcan Protest" took place. 400 women protested against cultural pressure by tossing their bras, cosmetics, and hairsprays in the trash.



1977 The first sports bra was created in 1977 by three students from Vermont University, Lisa Lindahl, Linda Mille, and Polly Smith. They called it the Jogbra. It was the talk of the town, made from two jog straps that were stitched together. The girls swooned over numerous well-known underwear companies.


1990 On her Blond Ambition Tour, pop artist Madonna made a strong fashion statement. She displayed her pointed cone-shaped corset (designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier).




2000 The most elaborate and expensive pair of underwear ever constructed, the $15 million Red Hot Fantasy Bra is composed of red satin with hand-cut Thai rubies and diamonds. It is included in the Guinness Book of Records
