The World Health Organization's top official for Europe said that mandatory vaccination against the Coronavirus is "absolutely the last resort". Europe, including Germany, is considering making Covid-19 vaccine compulsory after Austria announced in November that it would implement compulsory inoculations by February 1 next year, prompting large protests.
The imposition of vaccination mandates should only be considered as a last resort when all other viable options have been exhausted, said WHO Europe director Hans Kluge.
"Mandate effectiveness depends on a variety of contexts," Kluge said, adding that the public's confidence and trust in authorities should be considered.
