Wheellocks
In the mid-1500s, Europeans invented wheellock guns. The wicks were replaced by a wheellock, which produced a spark to ignite the gunpowder. A piece of pyrite was tightened in the small clamp of the lock. When the trigger was pulled on the wheellock, a spring-loaded wheel rotated, causing sparks to land in the flash pan. This type of lock works in the same way that modern lighters do. Wheellock firearms were far superior to matchlock firearms. They were more dependable and outperformed in the rain and snow.
Flintlocks
Flintlock pistols first appeared in the late 1500s. The flintlock had become the weapon of choice for the world's armies by the early to mid-1660s. Until the early 1800s, the flintlock was the dominant firearm.
