 The percussion cap firing system was a reliable and clean ignition system. Percussion cap firearms were widely used by 1825. Colt created the first mass-produced multi-shot revolver in 1835. As firearms became more mass-produced, their prices fell, making them more affordable.
Cartridge Firearms In 1859, the first full-rimfire cartridge was developed. Firearms that fired self-contained cartridges were common by the end of the Civil War. The firing pin of a cartridge firearm is released by squeezing the trigger. The firing pin then strikes the self-contained cartridge's primer, igniting the gunpowder and propelling the projectile down the barrel.
